It’s never easy to lose someone you love. Death is a difficult part of life, and most of us have lost a loved one, parent, spouse, child, sibling, grandparent, or a friend. Some of us may also grieve the loss of a relationship or friendship. The sting of loss is real, and it hurts.
As we celebrate the joy of Easter, we encounter Mary Magdalen, Peter, and John in our gospel reading mourning the loss of Jesus, their dearest friend. Jesus had transformed their lives and taught them the power of love. And now he was gone, and they are left to try to pick up the pieces as they chart a path forward without him. All seemed lost following his crucifixion. Things had not turned out as they had expected.
However, hope does not disappoint. As Mary Magdalene sat alone to pray and remember, Jesus called her by name, restoring hope. Jesus commissioned her to spread the good news that he was alive. She became the first disciple to proclaim the good news -- Jesus is alive! Love has triumphed! This Easter, Jesus also calls us by name, restoring our hope and commissioning us to spread the good news that he is alive and active in our lives.
As we celebrate this Easter Day, we celebrate the power of love, the power of hope. Hope does not disappoint! As St. Augustine said, “We are an Easter people and Alleluia is our song.” Happy Easter!
May God bless you and your loved ones today, tomorrow, and forever more.
